Bridge DentalWhen a tooth is missing it is important to replace the space with an implant, bridge or a partial denture. If a space is left unfilled it will cause the surrounding teeth to drift out of position, and spaces from missing teeth can cause your teeth and your gums to become far more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease and bone loss. Ideal treatment is usually an implant; however we understand that sometimes an implant is just not an option. The second choice to an implant is a bridge.
The intention of a bridge is to restore your ability to chew food, speak properly, distribute the forces in your bite so you do not hurt other teeth, maintain the shape of your face, and help prevent your other teeth from drifting out of position and to give you the wonderful smile that you want.
The actual procedure of having a bridge fabricated is very simple. It only involves two appointments to our office. The first appointment involves recontouring the teeth on either side of the space, impressions of your teeth and the placement of a temporary bridge. The second appointment is scheduled for two weeks later. During the second appointment the temporary bridge will be removed and the new bridge will be checked for fit and shade and the necessary adjustments will be made. The bridge is then permanently cemented into place. |
